Modelled astride a donkey, hand-painted overall and with a silk fringe to the saddle and rosary beads hanging from his cassock; incised 'Leon' to the naturalistically modelled base and mounted upon an ebonised plinth base, lacking domed cover; bearing a paper label 'D. Salvador de Leon, Professor/de Escultura, vive calle de Sta./Lucia Num. 14 Manz.47/Malaga' (to the base)

Almost certainly acquired by Captain Samuel Edward Widdrington, R.N., (formerly Cook) (1787-1856) during his extensive travels throughout Spain between 1829-1832 and 1842 and by descent at Newton Hall, Northumberland.
