The Grand Duchess Alexandra Nicholaevna, the third and youngest daughter of Nicholas I, was born on the 15th June 1825 in St Petersburg. From her earliest childhood, Alexandra stood out on account of her rare beauty and musical talent.
The marriage of the eighteen year old Grand Duchess to Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Georg took place on the 18th January 1844. On account of the sudden nature of the marriage, the dowry had to be prepared by the Imperial family in a very short space of time. The dowry of her older sister, Olga, who had married two years previously, was eventually copied. The present lot is part of the Banqueting Service, part of Alexandra's dowry.
