The columnar seal of square section, surmounted by a recumbent Buddhist lion, the muscular body coiled with its head turned to a bushy tail, the seal chop carved in relief, zhuwen, with four characters, Shiqing Huayi, 'Poetry from the heart; paintings from the mind', one vertical facet incised with a two-character signature, Sanyi

It is possible that the signature Sanyi identifies the late Qing dynasty carver and art connoisseur, Sun Sanyi, who was a native of Pinghu in Zhejiang province and was active during the Daoguang-Xianfeng reigns, cf. Zhongguo Meishu Jiarenming Cidian, Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 1985, p. 677.
