This piece bears the rare date letter & which has been used occasionally in Mons as it was in a few French cities, among others in neighbouring Dunkerque; when used, it would be inserted between the end of an alphabet (Z) and the beginning of the following one (A). According to Madame R. Stilmant (cf. L'Orfèvrerie en Hainaut, Anvers, 1985), it has been recorded on a piece dated 1719 which, in accordance with style, makes the chocolate pot 1746. This date-letter seems never to have been recorded before.
