EXTREMELY RARE FORMAT - MARIE JEANNE or TAPPIT HEN
This format is rarely seen outside of European based auctions. The volume is equivalent to 2.25 fluid liters or three standard bottles. The format size can be called Marie Jeanne (Bordelais) or tappit hen (Scots) and tregnum if holding wine or port.
VINTAGE 1953 *****
"One of my all time-time favorite vintages, combining fragrance, finesse and charm, epitomising claret at its best, the antithesis of some later day blockbusters. As so often with the Bordeaux maritime climate and changeable weather conditions, not entirely perfect growing season. A hot, sunny summer and propitious ripening period was rudely interrupted by heavy rain mid-September. However, the subsequent late harvest produced wines which were easy, lovely to taste even in cask: beautiful babies, no problems at puberty, well-behaved teenagers, elegant, lively and charming in their prime, middle-aged without crises, ageing gracefully. Unless treated badly." MB, Vintage Wine
Château Pichon-Longueville, Lalande--Vintage 1953
Pauillac, 2ème cru classé
Level: very top shoulder; heavily tissue stained label
In original wooden case
"A lovely '53. Elegant. Stylish. Nine notes, twice in Marie-Jeannes in 1978 and 1986, and on both occasions their silky (texture) noted as well as glorious fragrance. A couple of Réserve Nicolas bottles the same year, one lovely the other suffering from a poor cork. More recently, surprisingly deep and intense, despite its mature rim and an astonishing flavour, spicy but astringent. Next, at a 'Weinart Probe' Pichon-Lalande dinner, a magnum, less deep, fully developed with a gentle, fragrant, harmonious, cedary bouquet and lovely flavour. On the light side, drying out, with attenuated finish. Last noted Nov 1994. At its best **** Now fading. Drink up." MB, Vintage Wine
