This console, which is stamped CHAPUIS, was either executed by the Parisian ébéniste Claude Chapuis, who was active from 1797 until at least 1818, or by his celebrated Brussels counterpart Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864). Both employed a stamp without their initials, which complicates attribution. Jean-Joseph was undoubtedly the most successful of the two and supplied a wide variety of pieces to the Chateau de Laeken from 1806 onwards (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle 1796-1889, 1984, pp. 118-121).
