This drawing is a study for the frontispiece of an address presented to Queen Victoria by the Royal Academy to mark her Diamond Jubilee and was executed a year after Poynter became President of the Royal Academy (in succession to Leighton and Millais). As one of the most prominent members of the Victorian art establishment, it was entirely fitting that Poynter designed official documents and medals. The completed design is in the Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, U.S.A.
