The blade engraved with an inscription within a palmette border, with a carved ivory handle, marked on the back, in a fitted oak case

The inscription reads 'Presented to Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent by the States of Jersey in commemoration of the laying of the Foundation Stone of the Nurses' Hostel at the General Hospital on June 24^t^h 1948'

The trowel was presented to Princess Marina on her first trip to Jersey. On her arrival she was met by Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Grasett (1888-1971), the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. In the evening following the foundation stone ceremony she was chief guest at an offical dinner given by the Lieutenant Governor.
