The Banqueting Service for the Grand Peterhof Palace was commissioned in the reign of Emperor Nicholas I (1825-1855) as a service for 250 settings, consisting of 5,500 pieces. Copied after a Sèvres service made in the mid 18th century and given by Louis XV to Christian VII of Denmark in 1768, the service was decorated by E. Maksimov and A. Krasovskii. The original service, to which these plates belong, was made between 1848-1853. Extension and replacement pieces were added at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

For the other pieces from the Banquet Service of the Grand Peterhof Palace please see: An Imperial fascination: Porcelain, Dining with the Czars, Peterhof, A La Vieille Russie, New York, 1991, pp. 105-108, pl. 225 for a similar dinner plate.
