Gouache heightened with gold on paper, the dancer wears a bright yellow full skirt and jewelled red top, one hand raised above her head and the other holding up her green sash, signed 'Amal Kamtarin Muhammad Sadiq to the left of the skirt and with the words Shabrat Mihr Afrooz the the right, laid down on white card, some spotting

A pencil inscription on the verso of the mount reads "Mihr Afrooz a dancing girl belonging to the Prince of Shiraz - given to me by Ellis of the B.M.", and is initialled CD (Cyril Davenport) and dated 1896. A.G. Ellis of the Department of Oriental Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum compiled the Catalogue of the Arabic Printed Books in the British Museum (1894-1901). Cyril Davenport (1848-1941) was Superintendent of Bookbinding at the Museum.
