There is a sketch of this composition attributed to Jacob Jordaens in the Statens Museum, Copenhagen, and a painting catalogued as Studio of Jordaens in the Cleveland Museum of Fine Art, which, together with this painting, are likely to relate to an as yet untraced original by Jordaens. Late in his career Jordaens was commissioned by the King of Sweden to execute a series of paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, none of which have been traced; this commission may provide the lost original for this composition.
