Eliza Rosanna Gilbert (1821-1861), better known by her stage name Lola Montes, was an Irish-born dancer and actress. In 1846 she became the mistress of Ludwig I of Bavaria, and a year later he created her Countess of Landsfeld. Their relationship contributed to the downfall, and subsequent abdication in 1848, of the previously popular king.
It is thought that this painting was bought at the sale of the King's effects in 1848 by J. L. Clayton Esq.
