Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, plate LIV, illustrated a similar trestle-ended 'Lady's Work Table' or 'French Work Table' and noted that they were 'commonly made of satinwood'. This table bears a print that appears to depict a scene from the life of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, known as the philosopher. A tricoteuse featuring a similar elliptic tray stretcher and a hinged tray-top was sold from the Edward Sarofim Collection, in these Rooms, 16 November 1995, lot 142 (£11,500).
