A VERY RARE GILT-BRONZE SEATED LUOHAN
YUAN-EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY

The figure is cast seated with legs folded under a voluminous robe secured with a floral clasp fastened at the chest, the face finely modelled with high cheek bones and arched eyebrows above well-defined circular eyes, the hair dressed into a topknot and swept under a turban covered by a cowl, adorned with floral earrings suspended from pendulous ears, one hand in Bhumisparsa mudra, gesture of 'touching the earth', holding a rosary in the other

The present sculpture appears to be unique. The floral design along the garment edges is related to Buddhist images of the late Yuan/early Ming dynasty such as the seated Siddhartha in the Cleveland Museum of Art, illustrated by Ulrich von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, p. 515 no. 143E.
