Exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Society in 1845, the present watercolour depicts an animated scene in a crowd-filled tavern in which children and animals can be seen scrapping, and revellers watch as lively couples dance. The jig is a form of folk dance that originated in England in the 16th Century, but was embraced and adapted in Ireland where it became a national dance.
