Mainie Jellett was one of the pioneers of Ireland's modern movement. She studied in Dublin and then in London under Walter Richard Sickert A.R.A. (1860-1942), at Westminster School of Art, and finally in Paris under André Lhote (1885-1962) and Albert Gleizes (1881-1953). The present drawing was executed during her student days. It reveals her outstanding skill as a draftsman. Later she used this talent as a basis for her experiments in Abstraction.
