An Italian painter who settled permanently in Ireland in the 1790s (having first been sent from Stowe in 1787 by the Marquess of Buckingham, the Lord Lieutenant), Waldré is most famous for having painted the ceiling of Saint Patrick's Hall, Dublin Castle, the bozzetto for which is set as a table top in the Council Chamber of the Royal Dublin Society (Crookshank & Glin, op. 2002, p. 175). The classicising ornament in the spandrels surrounding the ceiling's central canvas bears a marked resemblance to those in the present picture.
