TWO CHINESE ARMORIAL DISHES FOR THE IRISH MARKET
LATE 18TH CENTURY
An oval dish decorated in famille rose enamels with the arms of Roche of Trabulcan within underglaze blue diaper borders in the well and at the rim, circa 1790; and a blue and white plate with the arms of Caulfeild, Earl of Charlemont, the rim encircled by the chain of the Order of St. Patrick, circa 1785

James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont (1728-1799) was a founding member and the first President of the Royal Irish Academy. A patron of the architect Sir William Chambers, Charlemont commissioned the celebrated medal cabinet executed for Charlemont House, Dublin, which is now in the Courtauld Institute, Somerset House.
