With their idiosyncratic trompe l'oeil parquetry, the striking contrast between the light burr and the darker timbers, and their elegant and well-proportioned lines, these console tables are closely related to several examples in the Palazzo Pitti. Among such related pieces, a cassettone dated 1793, in the Guardaroba del Re, Appartamenti Reali, Palazzo Pitti in Florence (ill. in. E. Colle, Il Mobile Neoclassical in Italia, Milan, 2005. p. 190); but even more closely related is a commode similarly inlaid with a rope-twist like motif on a burr-wood ground, probably manufactured by the brothers Pietro and Gasparo Landi, in the Conservatorio Cherubini and illustrated in Colle, Ibid., p. 197. Among related console tables sold at auction, a pair of parquetry console tables inset with marble tops was sold, Sotheby's, London, 6 December 2006, lot 120 (£14,400 with premium).
