The rectangular plate within a foliate-carved and gadrooned moulded surround, headed by a pierced cresting carved with a canopied pavilion flanked by sirens, flowerheads and exotic birds, surmounted by a stylised shell flanked by further birds, the sides carved with foliate scrolls and shells, originally with further carved elements to apron

With its shell-headed pierced diaper cresting and linenfold-enriched frame, this highly decorative mirror is characteristic of the first half 18th Century Venetian production. Closely related mirrors featuring comparable carved elements to the sides and cartouches are illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, Milan, 1958, Vol. II, Tav. CCXXXIV-V, and Morazzoni, Ibid, Milan, 1996, Novara, Tav. 291. Further related examples sold at auction include a shell-headed and chimera-adorned mirror sold from the 'Collection de Son Altesse Le Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan', Sotheby Parke Bernet Monaco S.A., 28-29 October 1979, lot 98, and a further example sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 15 December 1999, lot 60.
