The tripartite structure of this gueridon and recurrent use of thuya or similarly-figured timbers is clearly inspired by the oeuvre of the ébéniste Adam Weisweiler (maître in 1778), who executed several related gueridons for the celebrated Parisian marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre. Such prototypes relate to these illustrated in P. Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, p. 90, and in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siècle, 1998, p. 868, fig. A.

A closely related gueridon, formerly with Bernard Steinitz, Paris, was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 30 October 1993, lot 401 ($112,500 with premium) and again Christie's, New York, 17-18 November 1999, lot 543.
