The bergere is designed in the George IV French/antique fashion, with its Grecian palm-flowered and Ionic scrolled cresting relating to a pattern popularised by Richard Brown's, Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture, 1820. Such tablet rails, combined with palm-wrapped columnar feet, also appeared in the improved edition of Thomas King's, Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1835.
