The inscription reads: Ter Gedagtenis met deezen troffel hebben Anthoni Ewout, Francina Margaretha, Gerard Jan, Johanna Maria en Sibilla Volkera, zoons en dogters van den Hoog Ed. Gestr.

Anthony Adrian, 8th Baron Falconer (d.1804) succeeded to the Earldom of Kintore on the death of his cousin, George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal in 1778. His father, William, 7th Baron Falconer (d.1776) was a colonel in the Dutch service and settled at Groningen in Holland. The provenance of the trowel can be traced to the family of the 5th Earl's wife, Christina Elizabeth Sichterman (d.1809). Her father was Jan Albert Sichterman as named in the inscription on the trowel.
