A BRONZE FIGURE OF CHRIST AT THE COLUMN
WORKSHOP OF ANTONIO SUSINI (1580-1624), FLORENTINE, FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURY
Depicted standing in contrapposto with his head turned to dexter and his hands behind his back; on a later porphyry and parcel-gilt marble plinth; medium brown patina with reddish brown high points
This beautifully modelled contrapposto figure of Christ at the Column is known in one other version, in the Bode Museum in Berlin. That bronze, which at the time of its inclusion in the Giambologna exhibition in 1978 (loc. cit.) was thought to be unique, has been attributed to Antonio Susini, Giambologna's principal assistant. It was noted by Wilhelm von Bode that the bronze is a near mirror image of the Christ at the Column by Giambologna, now in the Bargello. Antonio Susini left Giambologna's studio to set up his own workshop. He is known to have reproduced a number of Giambologna's models as well as create original compositions of his own.
