Un homme et une femme, de profil, tournés vers la gauche; dans une monture ovale en or appliquée sur un fond en héliotrope, enchâssé dans un cadre associé élaboré en bronze doré, décoré de volutes, fronces et guirlandes, et surmonté d'une couronne circulaire entièrement moulée en serrant un camée ovale en agate représentant la tête de Méduse et datant du IIIème siècle après Jésus-Christ

A CARVED OVAL AGATE DOUBLE PORTRAIT PROFILE CAMEO OF TWO ROMAN HEADS

A man and a woman, facing left in profile; in an oval gold mount applied to a heliotrope ground within an associated elaborate gilt-bronze frame decorated with scrolls, swags and garlands, surmounted by an integrally cast circular wreath framing an oval agate cameo head of Medusa, of the 3rd century AD

Double portraits of rulers, introduced during the Hellenistic period, continued as a theme of Roman gem engraving and were revived during the Italian Renaissance, featuring contemporary as well as ancient royalty.
