The distinctive shape of this mortar with its raised cast dates and initials can be attributed to Edward Neale of Burford, Oxfordshire. Neale owned and operated a flourishing bell foundry at Burford in the 17th Century. A comparable mortar was sold in The John Fardon Collection, Christie's South Kensington, 1 May 1996, lot 228.
