L'inscription difficilement déchiffrable pourrait se lire "SIMON : ?CA NOANUS TERRANUS INGRESSI CONSILIUM AUERNI ANN:1653 RA165.
En présumant que cette lecture soit correcte, elle se traduirait par Simon (Ca)noanus, mortel, entra dans le monde des morts en l'année 1653, suivi des initiales du donateur et d'une date dans les années 1650.

A GERMAN SILVER-GILT CUP FORMED AS A BEAR
UNMARKED, POSSIBLY STRASBURG, SECOND HALF OF 16TH CENTURY
The seated bear with one paw clutching a bunch of fruit, the other holding an applied shield with indistinct Latin memorial inscription dated 1653, the detachable cast head with collar and ring chain.
The inscription is extremely difficult to read but would appear to be 'SIMON : ?CA NOANUS TERRANUS INGRESSI CONSILIUM AUERNI ANN:1653 RA165'.
Assuming that this transcription is correct, this would appears to translate as Simon (Ca)noanus, a mortal, entered the counsel of Avernus (i.e. the underworld) in the year 1653 and then the initials of the donor and a date in the 1650s.
This bear has many similarities to an example by Diebold Krug, Strasburg, 1570-1580 (V. Laloux and P. Cruysmans, Le bestiaire des orfèvres, l'oeil du hibou, Switzerland, 1994, p. 172).
