The Boompjes, situated on the North bank of the river Maas in Rotterdam, was such a beautiful quay that it was sometimes compared to Venice. It was built in the 16th Century and in the 18th Century the Boompjes became Rotterdam's 'Gold Coast', a popular address for businessmen and offices such as those of the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company). Due to the heavy bombardments in May 1940 almost all the attractive buildings were destroyed. Today it is a central part of one of the most exciting cities in Europe with its contemporary architecture and lively cultural atmosphere.
