The low stand is conceived in the manner of sacrifical 'altar' tripods promoted around 1800 through the study of classical antiquities, and japanned black in tromp l'oeil bronze with golden enrichments. With its top raised on altar-scrolled and plinth-supported pilasters that terminate in festive bacchantae hooves, its design evolves from bacchante 'tripods' or 'thermes' supplied in 1782 for the Queen's House (now Buckingham Palace).
