Tasting note: From a vineyard with a southern exposure, the 1997 Barolo Gabutti reveals a dark garnet color with an amber edge. Aromas of smoke, tobacco, Provencal herbs, kirsch liqueur, and dried cherries are followed by a medium to full-bodied, dense, concentrated, powerful wine with excellent ripeness, a lush texture, and firm tannin in the finish. It gives conflicting indications of whether it will evolve quickly, or become more structured and enjoy 18 or more years of longevity. In any event, it is an excellent wine that falls just short of being outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016. 89 points. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #135, June 2001
