This curule stool represents one of the signature forms of the neo-classical period, and exists in a wide range of variations. It is similar in design to the work of the Boston upholsterer William Hancock who was active between 1819-1849. (See Stuart P Feld, Boston in the Age of Neo-Classicism 1810-1840, New York, 1999, p. 70, no 33.)
