Richard Slater (d. 1833) of Lancaster, is recorded as working for Gillows from 1785 to 1827. At the time of his death, it was said that he had been an employee of Gillows 'where he worked at one bench upward of 50 years' (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 821). A similar daybed to the present lot, with grained and parcel gilt decoration and inscribed in pencil 'Rd. Slator Oct 1812', also from Fasque, was sold at Bonhams, 27 September 1997.
