ELEVEN LATE 19TH CENTURY, ONE SIDE CHAIR LATER
Comprising a pair of armchairs and ten side chairs, each with cartouche-shaped back and pierced gothic-arched splat, the armchairs with serpentine arms and stop-fluted supports, above a padded serpentine seat covered in scarlet corduroy on square cabriole stop-fluted legs, two with paper label inscribed 'DEC/78', two with paper label inscribed 'NOV/77'
The armchairs: 36 in. (91 cm.) high; 24 in. (64 cm.) wide; 18½ in. (47 cm.) deep
The side chairs: 35 in. (89 cm.) high; 21½ in. (54 cm.) wide; 17½ in. (44.5 cm) deep (12)

The chair pattern is derived from a George III mahogany armchair in the Victoria & Albert Museum and illustrated in P. Macquoid & R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. I, p. 295, fig. 220. It was presented to the museum in 1922 by Edward Dent, Esq. and is illustrated in M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 140, no. Q/1.
An 18th century armchair of this model remains in the collection of Christie, Manson & Woods, Ltd.
