Printed by Thomas Baddeley in black with a portrait of Admiral Lord Viscount Duncan, quarter-length in profile to the left, within a named oval cartouche, inscribed to the lower-part Printed & Engraved by Thos. Baddeley Chapel-Field Hanley, above a verse, surmounted by trophies issuing berried leaves, the reverse printed with a cartouche known as 'Keep within Compass', after a print published by Carrington Bowles, titled and inscribed

Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown (1731-1804), was an Admiral who defeated the Dutch fleet commanded by Admiral de Winter on the 11th October, 1797. This victory is considered one of the most significant actions in Naval History during the Napoleonic Wars. The present lot was probably produced around the time of the successful action. Thomas Baddeley was an engraver active in Hanley between 1800 and 1834.
