Lot Essay

The original, on canvas, 229 x 159 cm, circa 1617, is in the Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen, Alte Pinakothek, Munich (E. Larsen, The Paintings of Sir Anthony van Dyck, 1988, II, p.104, no.242; I, fig.67). It is a slightly later version than the picture now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (Larsen, op.cit., no.240, fig. 62). The picture dates from the first Antwerp years and is influenced by both Rubens and Titian.
