Based on the Madonna in the picture of the Holy Family of circa 1580/85 in the Hispanic Society, New York (H.E. Wethey, El Greco and his School, 1962, p.57, no.84, II, fig.97). El Greco painted a Madonna with a similar physiognomy in the Holy Family with Saint Anne of circa 1590/95 in the Hospital of Saint John the Baptist extra Muros, Toledo (H.E. Wethey, op.cit., I, p.58, no.85, II, fig.98 and 104).
