In December 1917 Paul Nash, in his capacity as an Official War artist, was based with the Canadian forces at Zillebeke, two miles south-east of Ypres. In a letter to his wife of that year Nash wrote: 'The rain drives on...the shell holes fill up with greenish water...the black dying trees ooze and sweat and the shells never cease'. 'Rain, Lake Zillebeke' was based on a chalk drawing of the same title which was included in Nash's exhibition 'Void of War' at the Leicester Galleries in 1918. Herbert Read praised the exhibition: 'here was someone who could convey, as no other artist, the phantasmagoric atmosphere of No Man's Land'.
