Château Léoville-las-Cases
Of the three Léovilles, Las-Cases, Poyferré, and Barton, Las-Cases is universally the most admired. The estate, which stretches all the way from the edge of the town of St. Julien to Château Latour in Pauillac, is still one of Bordeaux's largest, though in 1840 the main estate was partially sold to Hugh Barton and Baron de Poyferré. Estate size notwithstanding, Léoville-Las-Cases's wines are made with fanatical precision, once by the late Michel Delon but now by his son, Jean-Hubert using grapes from the "grand clos", a vineyard enclosed by a thin wall and marked at the entrance by a large arch and notable Bordeaux landmark. Over time, Léoville-Las-Cases has retained its reputation as the greatest wine of St. Julien. This sale offers a very rare chance to acquire a full case of the inimitable 1959 Léoville-Las-Cases, a 4 star wine that Michael Broadbent described as, "claret at its best." The 1962 is a 5 star wine, which Mr. Broadbent calls, "as good as they come."
