After the fall of Khartoum and the slaughter of General Gordon in 1885 by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, Herbert Kitchener in 1892, having been appointed commander of the Egyptian army set about plans for the British recapture of the Sudan. In 1896 the campaign began using a joint force of British and Egyptian troops under the title of the Anglo-Egyptian Nile Expeditionary Force. The campaign culminated in the overwhelming victory of the Anglo-Egyptian forces at the Battle of Omdurman on 2nd September 1898 and the recapture of Khartoum two days later.
