Depicting a field of nine squares at center with a tantra written in red, the eight auspicious Jain symbols surrounding a worshipper above, rows of wandering Jain monks below, a plan of a Jain temple in a red field at right, various noblemen worshipping Jinas at left and lower right, the rest filled with rows of standing or seated Jinas in architectural niches

Patas such as the present example were displayed within Jain temples during the Kartik Purnima (full-moon) festival to mark the most auspicious time to begin a pilgrimage. Devotees who were unable to make the pilgrimages could receive the religious merit of visiting the sites by meditating upon their representations.
