Isaac de Moucheron studied under his father, Frederik de Moucheron, also an artist. In c.1695 he travelled to Italy where he stayed for the next couple of years, working predominantly in Rome. There, he was one of the 'Schildersbent', a society of Dutch and Flemish painters notorious for its bacchic rituals and opposition to the Roman Accademia di S. Luca. On his return to Amsterdam in 1697, de Moucheron fostered an interest in classicist French masters such as Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet, copying and etching their work, and their influence on his landscapes was significant.
