Carlo Alberto, King of Sardinia, (1798-1849) succeeded his distant cousin Carlo Felice in 1831 as king. His name is bound with the first Italian statute and the First War of Italian Independence, (1848-1849). He abdicated in favour of his son Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, (1820-1878) after his army was defeated at the Battle of Novara. He went into exile in Portugal and died there in 1849.
