Prince Eugenio di Savoia-Carignano (1663-1736), a field-marshal and statesman was the greatest soldier of his generation. The son of Eugenio, comte de Soissons, he was refused a commission by Louis XIV and entered the service of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, (1640-1705) against the Ottoman Turks. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. In 1704 he joined the Duke of Marlborough and together won victory at Blenheim. Prince Eugenio was noted for his stern character and his passioned dislike of Louis XIV as well as for his patronage of the arts.
