Politician and Parliamentarian army officer, Edward Montagu was the eldest son of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester (c. 1564-1642), judge and government official, and his first wife, Catherine (d. 1612), second daughter of Sir William Spencer of Yarnton, Oxfordshire. In 1623, he accompanied Prince Charles to Spain in his bid to seek the Infanta's hand in marriage, and was rewarded by being created a Knight of the Bath at Charles' coronation in 1626.
