Thomas Heaphy painted two portraits of Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, the great Victorian statesman, who lived at Broadlands, Hampshire. At this time it seems that Heaphy also took this portrait of Miss Emma Godfrey whose correspondence with the Earl can be found in the University archives at Southampton.
