C'est au cours de l'été 1891 que Seguin fait la connaissance de Forbes-Robertson. Les deux hommes se lient rapidement et Seguin exécutera quatre portraits de son ami, dont celui-ci, au cours de l'année 1892. Forbes-Robertson lisant son journal montre une harmonieuse interpénétration des dons de caricaturiste de l'artiste qui, avec une économie de traits, parvient à saisir l'attitude de Forbes-Robertson et de l'esthétique nabi où la ligne se fait sinueuse et décorative.

It was during the summer of 1891 that Seguin first met Forbes-Roberson, eventually executing four portraits of his friend. Forbes-Roberson lisant son journal, executed in 1892, shows off the artist's talent as a caricaturist. With only a few lines, he captures Forbes-Robertson's dandy demeanor, with sinuous and decorative lines, remains purely Nabi.
