On 5th September 1914, U21, commanded by Lieutenant Otto Hersing, torpedoed the Royal Navy light cruiser Pathfinder. The cruiser's magazine exploded, and the ship sank in four minutes, taking 259 of her 296 of the crew with her. It was the first combat victory of the modern submarine. Having successfully sunk five other vessels during the course of the war U21, on its way to surrender, was scuttled by Hersing on 22nd February 1919.
