Alfred Morrsion was the second son of James Morrison, M.P. (d.1857) of Balham Hill, London, and Basildon Park, Berkshire. The son of an innkeeper in Hampshire, James Morrison had made his fortune in London, first in habedashery and then in banking. A distinguished connoisseur, he formed a remarkable collection of British and Old Master pictures, including a number of historic portraits.
