The artist was a late representative of the Haarlem School of landscape painters. His oeuvre consisted mainly of river landscapes that employed the device of a receeding diagonal riverbank, a motif invented by Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. Here that motif is adapted to land with the view receeding into the coast beyond the church. He is perhaps best known for his winter scenes which were strongly influenced by the work of the slightly earlier Haarlem landscape painter, Claes Molenaer.
