The term "Selenus" has been used after a design illustrated in Gustavus Selenus' Das Schach oder Kvnig-Spiel, Leipzig 1616. The form was prevalent throughout Germany and Austria in the 19th century. The pieces are generally turned and carved typically from bone in several sections, then threaded together, polished to simulate ivory, and one side stained in either red, black or brown.
